Using online spaces and technology: - Safely - Appropriately - Responsibly How do I know if a website is safe and reliable? Beck (1997) has described five ways to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of a website. (1) Authority Is there an author/organization? How reputable is the author/organization? (2) Accuracy Is the information reliable and free from errors? (3) Objectivity Is there bias to one particular viewpoint only? (4) Currency Is the page dated? Is the date recent? (5) Coverage How in-depth is the material? What topics are explored? Do I know the people that are talking or posting comments on the website? What personal information is the website asking me to provide? What should I do if I think I am not safe online or safe using technology? Please tell your teacher or an adult you trust immediately. Your teacher or trusted adult can help you. RULES when online: 1) Please respect the privacy and personal information of other people at all times. 2) Please use appropriate language at all times. 3) Please do not write, comment, or send messages that are harassing, abusive, threatening, defamatory or involve bullying. 4) Please do not post or download inappropriate or illegal content online. 5) Please do not give out your private information to people you do not know online. 6) Please follow all copyright procedures. Please acknowledge work that is not yours - do not plagiarize. 7) Please follow your schools' code of conduct policy and ICT policy at all times. What happens if I break the rules? - The teacher will report serious malpractices to the principal, deputy principals, school welfare officer, and parents/guardians. At all times, the student or students accused will be supported. Parents/guardians have the right to challenge any allegation made to a student or students. - If the school principal deems the breach of rules to be serious, the principal in consultation with the students' parents will notify the police. - A written report of the students' misconduct will be created and be kept on file at the school, sent to the Department of Education and Communities and sent to the students' parents/guardians. |
